Do What Scares You The Most
Stacy Stowers is my friend and inspiration. She is also a traveling raw food chef who woke up one morning and said” I’m gonna do what scares me the most!” She sold her condo and most of her belongings, bought a Prius, and set out on a Raw Foods Rock Tour. She travels from state to state, family to family, person to person, for a week at a time, sharing the wisdom of a raw diet. Think super nanny but in the form of a petite blonde with a southern drawl and a small voice and a big heart – certainly making it easier to worm her way into homes all over the U.S.! “I don’t want to be a raw chef for the wealthy,” she stated recently and has set out to find families on welfare. Her belief is that everyone should have the knowledge of how to prepare healthy, mostly raw food and she wants to show you how.
Stacy starts by introducing her Happy Shake, loaded with spinach and actually, good! Perhaps it’s the raw chocolate powder that makes it palatable but everyone one in our company is chugging the Happy Shake around the office. “Green is glorious” she chirped at us each morning.
Next she starts with raw junk food. Dan from Odessa, Tx, insisted he couldn’t give up his donuts. ‘Dan’s Donut Holes’ were created and everyday he started with the Happy Shake and a Curry Coleslaw for lunch. Dan is off his blood pressure medication.
Dan's Lemon Coconut Donut Holes
1 cup almonds
1 1/2 cups pitted dates (Medjool, khadrawhi, or other semi-soft date)
Seeds of 1 vanilla bean
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
Zest of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup dried shredded coconut
In your food processor, chop almonds into small pieces.
Add remaining ingredients and process some more until well mixed.
Roll into Donut Holes.
To serve, chill for a couple hours until firm.
Will keep for six days in the fridge.
Possibly the funnest part about a week with Stacy is getting your own recipe. My daughter wanted a twix bar and the two of them set about coming up with a raw version. The Banana Roadkill was quite a hit as well:
"Stacy's Banana Roadkill"
Plastic Wrap
2 Super Duper Ripe Bananas...the Super Duperest!
Raw Honey
Cinnamon
Raw Walnuts
Goji Berries....the GUTS!
Raw Cacao Nibs....Happy Stuff : )))
Take Plastic Wrap and lay it out on your flat surface....a large piece.
Lay your two peeled bananas down and fold Plastic Wrap over them.
Now flattenen them out like they just got run over by a big huge TRUCK! (remember kids to ALWAYS look both ways BEFORE crossing the ROAD)
Shape into a big flat cookie.
Open your Plastic Wrap and drizzle your Raw Honey all over the top.
Now sprinkle lots of Cinnamon. Throw on the Walnuts. Make sure there is a Walnut in every bite!
Toss on some GUTS....I mean Goji Berries.
At last, you are ready for the RAW CHOCOLATE NIBS...this resembles the 'gravel' that would be sqooshed into the Bananas as they were ran over by the truck....
Now FREEZE on a plate. Break apart and try to share. Sharing is good...but hard to do with "Stacy's Banana Road Kill".
Stacy feels she has the best job ever. She likens herself to a goji berry. “I’m an adaptogen. I go with the family’s program. However they do the dishes, laundry, what they want to eat, that’s what I do.”
Stacy’s love of people is apparent in her photos of her ‘families’, she posts on her facebook page.
When she was a child, her favorite show was a segment on a news series where a guy picked a place on the map, flew there, went to a phone booth, opened the phone book and picked a name and showed up at their home. It’s funny but there are some similarities to her childhood idea of a great job! Except she feels right at home as she as she walks through the door. “They aren’t strangers to me. I love people! Everyone has a story.” Stacy likes that people get real, fast. When you are working in the kitchen with food, it’s not about chit chat.
And as for what scares her the most? It was staying where she was, stagnant. My friend Jolene Hardy has a spin on an Anais Nin quote that I think sums up Stacy’s feelings – And the day came that the pain, to remain the same, was great than the risk to grow.

My friend Kate Bush....Boston Mass.
Hi Stacy!
I just wanted to tell you how awesome it was to have you at our house. Since you left, I have made onion bread, nachos, pizza, corn salad, pesto, Stacy salad with dulse and of course truffles (more than once)! We have been happily eating raw and feeling good. My friends are still talking about our party, the one where you did all the work and we had so much fun. I am on my way to Greece now. The show I was in the day you left was written up in the New York Times last Wednesday with a picture of my FP outfit. Hope all is well with you. Keep in touch. Kate

Evanston Illinois....my dear friend Kathy
Kathy took me to my very first Raw Food restaurant in April of 2007. I refused to eat...."I'll just have the lemon water"
"My dear friend Stacy is an inspiration. When I met Stacy she was having a problem with feeling tired all the time. When she discovered the benefits of eating raw she could not be stopped. She is living proof of the benefits of the raw food lifestyle and truly a joyful person to be around. I love her creativity and the wonderful recipes she has come up with that show everyone how much fun it can be to live and to eat raw foods. The HappyShake taste great and is the way to start the day. You will learn and love the process of learning how to feel your absolute best." Kathy Lynch
Thank you Kathy for YOUR inspiratin and this beautiful gift I get to share with all!!! love S

Russ & Ashley Teller....Indiana
After Stacy stayed with us, we wanted her to move in permenantly. It's always interesting opening your house and kitchen up to someone fully but Stacy made it so easy. She is respectful, inspirational, fun, great with kids, and really good at what she does. We are not actually a completely raw family, but Stacy was never pushy and made raw food fun. She made us smoothies every morning, elaborate meals like raw lasagna, and delicious raw desserts. She's always open for guests to share with. Conversation is easy and food is at it's best when she is around. Having her in our home was truely a life changing experience, we made a friend for life, and we look forward to having her back again.

Turquoise Barn....an awesome Raw Vegan/Vegetarian B&B!!!
Stacy stayed with us for 3 weeks here at Turquoise Barn. It was great. She is very upbeat, positive and full of energy, very adaptable, and was able to be flexible in our often hectic household; helping out with whatever task needed to be done in addition to all the wonderful food prep she did. I was able to focus on backed up projects and not have to worry at all about the food . She was even able to come up with a recipe (road-kill yummy) for my 9 year old. It was a great experience for our family and we hope to have her back again.

Avolon Beach New Jersey....Greenleaf family
Our family had the pleasure of having Stacy join us for our yearly vacation at the beach in Avalon, New Jersey. Stacy introduced us to an array of incredible raw foods. We began our morning with Happy Shakes, served elegantly in a wine goblet. We were treated to heavenly desserts, a key lime pie(my favorite), a pineapple pie and Cashew Nut Tassies.Stacy also made a wonderful salsa that had a little bite to it. The salads she made were outstanding and creative. Our last night Stacy cleaned out the refrigerator and made a delicious salad out of left overs.
In addition to her cooking talents, Stacy has the ability to blend in with a family. She is friendly, kind and wonderful with children. She is energetic and eager to please..She was present, but never in the way. We will always remember our fun-filled week with Stacy and hopefully change our eating habits to include more raw foods in our diets.

Jason H....Phoenix Arizona. Take his challenge!
When I first heard of raw food, I'll be honest. I didn't care for it at all. I enjoyed a good steak, and love fish. Always been a meat and potatoes type of guy with a good glass of red wine. So meeting Stacy I was interested in what makes her so HAPPY. I have always been interested in health. Before I met Stacy I did a lot of research and found out what dairy does to adults. What a microwave does to food lol. I have been into exercise but after a very bad foot injury gained about 30 lbs. For somehow I tried to lose the extra weight and after a year, it was hard going back to the gym. I just didn't have the energy. So I was opened how raw foods could work for me. After realizing that our body does not crave fats and calories but nutrients. I thought trying it for a week wouldn't hurt and plus I can see if this works for me. So I tried it for a week, happy shake and all. I have to be honest, I enjoyed waking up in the morning just for the Happy Shake lol. About 5 days into it, I saw a difference. I woke up earlier and one morning I woke too early. Stacy was still sleeping and didn't want to wake her up. So I went out with it. Well after that day I was like I don't care if she is still sleeping, I will wake her up next time. That's all I'm going to say lol. But It took sometime after Stacy left to get in a routine that worked out for me. Truthfully it is hard when you are hungry and need to pick something up. But you have to prepare your food ahead of time. The Happy Shake is easy in the morning. But thinking of something for lunch. For dinner I will steam artichokes and mix that with avocados. Then with mushrooms, then dehydrate chips. Or I'll do a salad with sprouts and veggies. But more of all It helped me to lose the weight I was spending money and diet pills and protein shakes. So far I have lost 15 lbs in 2 months just eating raw. Now I will have a glass of red wine or I'll pop real pop corn with olive oil from time to time. But that's it, well I will grind up to make coffee at times. I have to say I am about 80-90% raw and now have the energy that I did not have before. In about 2 months I will be back where I was over 1 1/2 ago. My chiropractor has told me he saw a huge difference in me. I was not blooded and was not in pretty good shape. So I told him what I have been doing. He thought that was very smart and said that his son works for ford modeling In Los Angeles and all the top models are on raw food. I was really happy knowing I finally made the right choice. The best part is being creative. Everyday is different and I enjoy going to shop for good quality raw food. Plus it is really cool saying I'm a raw foodist lol. There is a saying "tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are", that's so true! We are killing ourselves with what we eat and don't even know it. So take the 1 week challenge and prove me wrong that it will change how you feel and live daily. I dare ya, and after you follow the program or just use the Happy Shake. You will feel and be happier and healthier. Jason H.
